“We take clean, affordable drinking water for granted. Always.

“Yet it might not be that way forever.

“People in a small Colorado town learned firsthand about life without tap water when salmonella infected their source water in 2008. For three weeks, Alamosa residents were restricted to one gallon of water a day. Bottled water supplies were stripped off shelves. Restaurants, car washes, and beauty salons closed. Families ate off paper plates, cooked microwave meals, and bathed in their single gallon.

“Fortunately, such disease outbreaks are rare in the United States, thanks to a sophisticated water infrastructure and advanced water treatment techniques. Alamosa’s situation reminds us that water is precious, and keeping it safe and plentiful is critically important to our well-being and our livelihoods.”
